The Dishes
I remember a summer day when I looked forward to going outside and spending time with my friends. Until my mom asked me to do the dishes before I headed out. At first, I felt a bit disappointed, but I decided to give in and do the dishes. As I approached the sink, I noticed the sunlight beaming through the kitchen window, making a warm welcome to do the dishes. The dishes were piled as tall as Mount Everest. As I was going to start washing the dishes I could hear the laughter and joy from my friends outside, making me feel jealous.
I began filling the sink with warm soapy water, the sound of the water running from the faucet was surprisingly soothing. I rolled up my sleeves and inserted my hands into the water, feeling the bubbles tickle my skin. As I picked up the dish, I made a game to see how quickly and efficiently I could wash and cleanse the dishes. The water felt so cool and refreshing, and the “clickity-clack” from the plates was surprisingly satisfying. I took the time to scrub and rinse the annoying little bits left on the plate.
As I worked, I could still hear my friends voices fading away asking if I could come out and play. At first, It made me want to give in and go outside. However, as I fell into the rhythm of washing and drying, I was getting lost in the task. I even started humming a tune that my sister was playing. Before I knew it, I fell in the moment.
I believe that I give more while having fun. Once I allowed myself to enjoy the moment, I put in more effort and went that extra mile by wiping down the countertops and tidying up the kitchen. The positive energy and enjoyment inspired me to do more than I was asked to do.
Being relied upon by others does make me happy. Even though I had wanted to go outside, I felt a responsibility and joy in helping my mom with the dishes. It makes me feel capable of helping others, and I was fulfilled to calm her day down. Having fun while helping others can be positive for them, not just me alone. Your time shouldn''t always be spent on your friends, spreading love with your family, and respecting what your parents do for you. The older you get the more you realize how little acts of kindness can make a big change.
