Maria Weizman - Grade 9, Chaminade Julienne High School
A foundation is otherwise known as a base or substructure. It is the core of a building. The thing that keeps it standing. Teenage life can be hard. There’s too much homework and I stay up until my eyes hurt. Then I have to go to swim practice. I have a meeting after school twice this week. Get service in on time! Getting a seventy on an important test. Having to work hard and long on the weekends. My building stands tall through all of that keeping me happy and proud. Knowing that I work hard everyday will change the world or make a difference. That’s my foundation. What gets me through those tough times and builds on my foundation every day is my family, school, and traveling.
My family, part of my foundation, is big, loud, and Italian. I love this because we eat good food, laugh, and invite random people to share in the fun. I also work for our family pizza business and save for my traveling. I started working there at age of 11. It’s boosted my confidence. Standing at the Yellow Springs Street Fair with a line of people trying to serve them all is harder than it sounds. I had to take control and stand at that pizza table and top pizzas for five hours. I felt great after that and had money in my pocket. Having them support and encourage me to achieve my goals has strengthened my foundation.
My school is a big block of my building. It has raised my level of faith and academics. It will help me to go to a good college and exceed in life independently. School has made me expand, grow, and take chances. I’ve gotten involved in many clubs like student council, the language club, and LIFE group. These clubs have helped me to be a better person and spread happiness around. School helps me socially, mentally, and physically. Making friends laughing, and enjoying your time at school helps you become a happier person. Mentally, your brain is challenged with stress and curriculum. Physically school can make me in great shape because I’m climbing a lot of stairs and joining new sports. My foundation is getting stronger at a pretty fast rate since starting back at school.
In addition to family and school, my foundation has gotten stronger because of my passion to travel. When I was twelve, I raised 6,000 dollars and traveled to Europe; now I’m saving for another trip to the south pacific. I remember talking with the other kids in my group and they said that their parents paid for the trip. When I heard that it made me feel so happy and proud. The trip was so much better because of that.
So my foundation is my building up from the bottom to the very top. It is full of family, dreams, and passion that will lead me into a future of great things.
