A Life Worthwhile
“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” This quote by Albert Einstein highlights how service can inspire us to create a positive impact in the world. Helping others gives my life purpose and makes me feel like I’m doing good. Over the past year, I have volunteered more than 200 hours at the Cincinnati Zoo and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. These are experiences that have been very rewarding, amazing, and fun.
This past summer, I had the privilege of serving as a “ZooTeen” at the Cincinnati Zoo. After navigating a thorough an extensive application process and orientation, I was thrilled to be accepted! This was my first summer in the program, as I had to be at least 13 and a half. As a “ZooTeen”, I engaged with visitors and assisted instructors with summer camps. While I enjoyed both roles, I found myself feeling more excited to work with the campers. Teaching children was incredibly fulfilling, as I loved helping them discover more about the animals and their habitats. It was a demanding job, as I often spent under the sun for long hours, but the joy I felt at the end of each day made it all worthwhile. I mostly worked with kindergarteners and first and second graders, who were always enthusiastic and eager to learn and explore.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my volunteer work was the responsibility of educating visitors about the conservation issues facing some animals and their habitats. I felt proud to spread awareness about these important topics, knowing that I was making a difference. Overall, my time at the zoo was an exciting and educating experience for me, and I am eager to return next year.
For the past two years, I have also volunteered at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton, Ohio. This children’s museum allows kids to explore natural history and science in a fun and engaging way. I enjoyed interacting with people of all ages and helping families learn about the wonders of nature. It was an incredible opportunity to share knowledge and inspire curiosity.
From discussing animal conservation at the Cincinnati Zoo, to engaging visitors and educating children at the Boonshoft Museum, I believe I have made a positive impact in my community. I am excited to participate in more service opportunities in the future, as I really love helping others and contributing to their happiness!
